Spondyloarthropathy Explained

The Spondyloarthropathies are systemic inflammatory diseases that may affect the joints and other organ systems. There are several conditions that fall under the umbrella term of Spondyloarthropathies which include: psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, inflammatory bowel disease related arthritis and reactive arthritis.

Spondyloarthropathy Symptoms

While there are specified symptoms unique to each of these conditions, they can have some shared manifestations including inflammatory joint pain/swelling (such as involving hand joints, wrists, knees, ankles, toes, sacroiliac joint or back), inflammation of the eye (such as uveitis), swelling of the entire finger or toe (dactylitis), tendonitis, inflammation where the tendon inserts into the bone (enthesitis), rashes such as psoriasis or erythema nodosum, positivity of a genetic test called HLA-b27 and absence of the typical blood tests that are often positive in other connective tissue diseases such as in Rheumatoid Arthritis or lupus. Unlike Rheumatoid Arthritis, the joint symptoms may not be symmetric.
